The Coop: A Creative Space for Artists, Writers, and Everyone in Between

I always had a hard time considering myself an artist. I always felt simply saying that I enjoyed being creative was enough. Afterall its not like I had work hanging in a fancy gallery, or published anywhere, and I don't have a preferred medium that I excel at. Its more like I just enjoy playing with different types of art, and making all variety of different things I enjoy.

But here’s the thing: making things does make you an artist, just like writing makes you a writer.

The Coop is a place for all of us, those who know without a doubt that they are an artist or a writer, and those who maybe aren't so sure, but they do have this thing they do they enjoy.

One of the things I enjoy most about this project is the variety of ways in which I get to be creative. One day I'm playing editor and reading and reviewing submissions; the next I'm playing with layout and formatting; then onto writing my own contributions; and we can't forget the design elements.

The main premise of this project is its cooperative and collaborative nature. That’s not just about what goes into the zine—it’s also about keeping the process open and transparent. So, here’s a bit of behind-the-scenes news: our cover design is here! Check it out!

Our first issue drops October 1, and we’re looking for submissions! Here’s what we’re hoping to include:

• Local (Sierra County, NM) community events for our events section.

• Ads from local businesses, events, and services.

• All kinds of writing—poetry, short stories, comics, how-tos (like homesteading), or even a recipe.

• Ideas for regular columns or series—we’re particularly looking for a continuing short story to run over several issues.

The vibe of The Coop is all about feeling good and uplifting the community. There’s plenty of negative media out there, but this isn’t one of those spaces. This is your corner of the world to escape into a great story, check out tarot predictions for the collective, or spend an afternoon coloring. The Coop is designed to elevate your vibe and add a little more positivity to your life.

PS - Today I more confidently consider myself an artist, and I've even had a painting, two actually hang in a gallery - not that I believe that matters anymore.
